TECHNICAL BOOKS

In looking at every book reviewed during the year collected by the
Book Review Digest (1925), one is struck by how much publication is
devoted not to the stuff we cultural historians love but to purely
practical matters, to books like Air Brake Inspector’s Handbook,
Chemistry of Wheat Flour, Painting of Railway Equipment, Port
Development
, Public Finance, Street Traffic Control, County Library Service,
Automotive Electricity, Metallurgy of Aluminium and Aluminium Alloys
and Industrial Coal: Purchase, Delivery, and Storage (all 1925). And a
second set, like Gasoline: What Everyone Should Know about It (1925),
performs the same service in dumbed-down versions.
